Hyeryung Hwang
Dr. Hyeryung Hwang is Associate Professor of Global Literature in the Interdisciplinary General Education program in the Department of Liberal Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. A multidisciplinary teacher-scholar, her work spans world literature and cinema, theories of imperialism and colonialism, and peripheral aesthetics and politics. Her research, engaging East Asia and South America, examines the persistence of realist forms in the global periphery and how heterogeneous forms of peripheral neo-realism offer alternative cultural analyses of global capitalism. Deeply invested in the future of liberal and higher education, she develops interdisciplinary, student-centered curricula that connect humanistic inquiry with global and comparative perspectives. Her publications include articles in Journal of Criticism and Theory (2024), Midwest Quarterly (2022, 2020), The Global South (2017), and Telos (2017). She is a two-time winner of the Victor J. Emmett Jr. Memorial Award (2020 and 2022) and a 2023 recipient of Cal Poly Pomona’s Wall of COOL (Celebrating Outstanding Opportunities for Learning) Award for excellence in course design and student success. Before joining Cal Poly Pomona, she taught at McNeese State University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she earned her Ph.D. in English.
