Sponsored by the Teagle Foundation, the National Fellowship on the Future of Liberal Education (NAFFLE) brings together two dozen faculty members from public and private universities across the country for a set of multi-day sessions over two years. The fellowship is designed for faculty members who have shown sincere interest in reinvigorating liberal education and undergraduate teaching beyond their own research agendas and classrooms. NAFFLE encourages talented faculty members to consider how their own teaching, research, and university service fit into the larger context of higher education.
Grounded in the history of liberal education and consideration of its possible futures, NAFFLE convenings focus on the most urgent questions American universities face today. Fellows will examine academic leadership and the changing nature of the professoriate; the shape of general as well as graduate education; classroom teaching in a world shaped by AI and other digital technologies; and the relationship between college campuses and democratic society. Fellows will delve into case studies of institutional change, small-scale and large, and hear from university presidents and other leaders on the art of guiding, managing, and transforming complex institutions.
The fellowship offers grounding and perspective, incubates new ideas, inspires a spirit of experimentation, and creates a cohort of rising academic leaders who will remain in touch throughout their careers.
